Dr Chai graduated in Medicine from the National University of Singapore in 1994. He completed his Basic Specialty Training in Internal Medicine and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1999. Subsequently, he joined the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) for Advanced Specialty Training (AST) in neurology, and was accredited as a neurologist in 2003 upon completion of his training. He is presently a Senior Consultant in the Department of Neurology, NNI.

In 2003, he was awarded the MOH Human Manpower Development Plan scholarship to do a fellowship in neuromuscular diseases and electromyography at the University of Rochester Neuromuscular Center, NY, where he spent about two years. Dr Chai’s special interest is in the evaluation and management of neuromuscular diseases. Besides doing electromyography studies, he also reads muscle and nerve biopsies and performs certain neuro-immunological tests such as paraneoplastic and ganglioside antibodies detection. These studies are performed in the NNI Neuromuscular Diagnostic Laboratory for which he is in charge.

Apart from being a full time clinician, Dr Chai is also passionate in imparting his knowledge and skills to medical students and trainees. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke University-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School. He teaches at various levels, which includes medical students at both preclinical and clinical years, Residents, Registrars, as well as nurses doing diploma and master courses.

Dr Chai was admitted as a Fellow to the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2006. He is also a member of various professional bodies, namely the Clinical Neuroscience Society of Singapore, the American Academy of Neurology and the World Muscle Society. He is also recently elected to be an executive member of the Asian Oceanian Myology Center, which seeks to promote basic and clinical research, as well as education, in the neuromuscular field.
