Professor Joseph Selvanayagam is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Flinders University, the Director of Cardiac Imaging at the Flinders Medical Centre, and the Director of the Cardiac MRI core-lab at Flinders Medical Centre. He is well regarded both nationally and internationally for his strong commitment to cardiac imaging.

Joseph’s clinical and research world over the past 10 years have been devoted to the development and application of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR), with a particular focus on myocardial viability, coronary revascularisation injury, stress perfusion techniques and cardiomyopathy imaging.

Having received a doctorate in cardiovascular magnetic resonance at Oxford University, Joseph became a Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital at Oxford. On his return to Australia following his time in the United Kingdom, Joseph currently serves on the board of Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) and has been instrumental in founding the Australian and New Zealand Working Group of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, currently serving as the inaugural president. He is actively involved in Cardiac magnetic resonance teaching in South Australia, nationally and internationally.

Professor Selvanayagam has had significant international coverage, having received the Clinical Young Investigator Award from the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and the Samuel Levine Clinical Investigator Award from the American Heart Association. Joseph has had his work recognised in a wide range of publications (>100) on cardiac MRI, cardiac CT and echocardiography, and is a reviewer for many journals, including Nature:Medicine, Circulation, the Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC), and European Heart Journal. He serves on the editorial board of JACC. Joseph has also presented and chaired sessions at major scientific meetings including the British Cardiac Society, the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and the European Society of Cardiology.

Professor Selvanayagam is a South Australian who is promoting the work and successes of cardiovascular imaging research to the rest of Australia and internationally. We look forward hearing of new developments in this field from his teams.
