Josef Buttigieg is a neurophysiologist in the Department of Biology. Buttigieg earned a PhD in neurophysiology with Dr. Colin Nurse at McMaster University. There he studied hypoxia regulation in the neonate and how this can be modified by environmental factors during gestation. He followed this work with a post-doctoral fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Michael Fehlings at the University Health Network, Toronto, in stem cell biology. His current research interests are on the environmental regulators of endogenous stem cell populations. The disease models he is interested in include stroke, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. Other research projects include vascular diseases related to stroke and exercise physiology related to stem cells.
