Dr. Jong-Sung Kim of the Department of Neurology has supervised and led a multinational clinical trial conducted in the field of central post-stroke pain, greatly elevating the status of AMC as an institution actively participating in global clinical trials. The results of this already completed global clinical trial, carried out with Dr. Kim as the principal investigator, are scheduled to appear in PAIN, a prestigious international journal in the field of chronic pain. After being proposed by Dr. Kim in 2005, this clinical trial was conducted for three years, from 2006 to 2008, in conjunction with 32 stroke centers in 10 countries from the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and Hong Kong.

Dr. Kim, who was verifying the therapeutic effect of drug treatments for chronic pain, also called central pain, partially validated the efficacy of Pregabalin, a drug made by Pfizer. Dr. Kim explained that the study, carried out together with researchers from 32 stroke centers, investigated the efficacy of medications for treating central pain. He added that the study was able to validate placebo effects and drug effects, in terms of improving the quality of life for patients suffering from pain-related sleep disorders.

In addition to his position as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Stroke, Dr. Kim takes an active role as a member of the editorial boards for five international neuroscience journals, including those of the American Stroke Association and the European Stroke Organisation.
