Abramson has been on faculty at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for 30 years and has devoted his career to the pathogenesis and prevention of various infectious diseases and has a particular interest in influenza.

He has served as a member and then chair of the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics (1995 – 2003) and a member and then chair of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP; 2003 – 2007)). In 2009 he was asked to be a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) and currently is serving a 3 year term as the chair of this group. SAGE is charged with advising the WHO Director General on global policies and strategies related to the use of vaccines in infants, children and adults including formulating policies for use of various vaccines to prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with various infections.
