John has more than three decades of healthcare entrepreneurship. He earned a BA from Drake University in 1982 and his MD from the Rosalind Franklin Medical School in 1986. John completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Christ Hospital and Medical Center, spending his final year as Chief Resident. He earned his MBA in 1995 and JD in 2005, both from Arizona State University. He holds memberships in the Arizona State Bar, the Federal District Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2015, John achieved a Six Sigma Black Belt from Arizona State University's Fulton School of Engineering. He furthered his knowledge with a certificate in Artificial Intelligence from MIT in 2019 and a certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from Harvard in 2022.

In 1993, John founded NextCare, Inc., which expanded under his leadership from one to 60 clinics across six states, generating nearly $100 million in revenue. He also co-founded Empower Emergency Physicians and practices emergency medicine in various locations in Phoenix and on Indigenous lands. In 2010, after his tenure as NextCare’s CEO, John launched MeMD, LLC, connecting over 500 medical professionals to patients virtually. Walmart acquired MeMD in 2021.

John's created Tribal Health in 2015, addressing healthcare needs in Indigenous territories. The organization now employs over 450 providers across 35 Native American healthcare facilities. In 2021, he founded Xcellerant Ventures, a VC firm focused on investing in health-tech startups.

John has penned and collaborated on books like Children’s Emergencies, Contract Issues for Emergency Medicine Physicians, and multiple titles in the Outliers Leadership series. In 2021, Forbes published his work, Entrepreneur Rx; The Physician’s Guide to Starting a Business. A sought-after speaker, John has delivered lectures to diverse audiences including the TEDx stage at ASU. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles.

John’s academic career includes an adjunct professorship at Arizona State University, W.P. Carey School of Business, where taught Health Law and Ethics. He lectures at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, covering topics from Alternative Dispute Resolution and Health Law Entrepreneurism. John’s community engagements include his past presidency of the Men’s Anti-violence Network and various board memberships, including serving the Phoenix Police “SWAT” Special Assignment Unit as Medical Director for over ten years. Additionally, he is an accomplished aviator, holding an Airline Transport Pilot Rating with proficiency in multiple aircraft.
