Professor John McMurray, Professor of Cardiology at the University’s Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, has received two prestigious awards for services in his field. The Mackenzie Medal, which is awarded by the British Cardiovascular Society, was given to Prof McMurray in recognition of his outstanding service to British Cardiology. He received one of the two medals given out each year by the Society at their Annual Conference in June.

Prof McMurray is also the recipient of the Louis and Artur Lucian Award for Research in Circulatory Diseases, which is awarded each year by McGill University, Montreal. This international award recognizes outstanding research in the field of circulatory diseases by a scientific investigator, or group of investigators, whose contribution to knowledge in this field is deemed worthy of special recognition.

Prof McMurray said: “I am delighted and proud to receive both these recognitions which also reflect the sterling work of many of my friends, colleagues, and collaborators locally, nationally and internationally, Both the Mackenzie Medal and Lucian Award are highly valued honors in the field of cardiology. I look forward to visiting McGill University in due course and collaborating with them to further our research in this field.”

Prof McMurray’s primary research interests are in heart failure, coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation and the cardiovascular consequences of diabetes and chronic kidney disease, with a focus on clinical trials and epidemiology. His main research activity in clinical trials and he is, or was, the principal investigator, member of the executive committee or steering committee member in a number of large trials in his areas of interest.

Prof McMurray is currently Professor of Medical Cardiology and Deputy Director (Clinical) of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association as well as the medical Royal Colleges in Edinburgh and Glasgow and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and UK Academy of Medical Sciences.
