Professor Deanfield undertook his undergraduate medical training at Churchill College, Cambridge University, and subsequently at The Middlesex Hospital, London. He then trained at The Hammersmith Hospital, London, in adult cardiology and at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London in Paediatric Cardiology. He is currently a Professor of Cardiology at The Heart Hospital, as well as at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and is a British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiology at University College London.
Professor Deanfield’s main clinical interests are pediatric cardiology/adult congenital heart disease (covering the whole age range of patients born with congenital heart disease), and cardiovascular disease prevention. He has been clinical and academic head of the cardiothoracic unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital and established the adolescent transition clinic, as well as the adult congenital heart disease center at The Heart Hospital London. This is now one of the largest in Europe. He has developed specialized programs for the management of arrhythmia, heart failure, and cardiac catheterization.
