Dr. Sarnthein is a Neurophysiologist who established and heads the Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM) unit at the Neurosurgery Department of UniversitätsSpital Zürich, Switzerland. He has over 1500 cases of IONM experience with a focus on skull base surgeries and the integration with intraoperative MRI. He has advanced the field with several publications and is frequently invited to speak at international conferences and courses. He has organized and hosted IONM courses in Switzerland together with Dr. Seidel and Dr. Kothbauer. His aim is to establish and teach IONM modalities for high-risk surgeries to improve surgical outcome and patient safety. Current research interests also include the development of biomarkers to improve the outcome of epilepsy surgery. Treatment quality is monitored prospectively in a comprehensive patient registry.
