Intraoperative Neurophysiology (ION) in Neurosurgery : Innovation, Controversies and Future Perspectives is organized by European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) and World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), International Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology (ISIN) and will be held during Dec 14 - 16, 2017 at University of Verona, Verona, Veneto, Italy.
Following the successful first edition of this unique EANS Symposium, we are delighted to renew the invitation to join us in Verona at the end of this year for the Second Edition of “Intraoperative Neurophysiology in Neurosurgery”.
Intraoperative Neurophysiology (ION) represents the quintessance of modern Neurosurgery, expanding the traditional concept of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery towards the broader view of neurophysiology-assisted Neurosurgery. Whilst the first edition of this meeting focused on “The Essentials” of ION, this year we will be addressing novel techniques, controversies and future perspectives.
ION has rapidly become of routine use in many neurosurgical centres within and outside Europe. Novel neurophysiological monitoring and mapping techniques such as lower brainstem monitoring, spinal cord mapping, cutting-edge subcortical mapping in asleep and awake surgery, and more, are emerging. Yet the discrepancy between the increasing request for neuromonitoring and the paucity of ION professionals may threaten the quality of ION. Credentialling (“Who does what?”), education (“Who to train, how to train?) and quality of neuromonitoring (remote monitoring, automated IONM system, surgeon-directed IONM systems) are also therefore critical factors for the future of Neurosurgery. Furthermore, financial and professional constraints significantly limit the implementation of ION in developing countries, as IONM will not escape the process of globalisation. These challenges need to be addressed by the neurosurgical community.
In collaboration with the International Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology and the Neuromonitoring Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, we will expand the discussion beyond Europe. A distinguished international Faculty will guide us in bridging neurosurgical and neurophysiological expertise.
