Dr. Taekman is a Professor of Anesthesiology, Director of the Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center, faculty in the Duke Center for Health Informatics, and faculty in the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He has more than 20 years of experience in learning technology, simulation, and informatics. He was a founder, an inaugural elected officer and served on the Board of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare during its establishment. Dr. Taekman has directed the interprofessional Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center since its inception. The HSPSC model, with clinicians and educators working side-by-side with human factors engineers, has been cited as a 21st Century model for improving patient safety.

Dr. Taekman's research focuses on the use of technology in education and patient safety. His areas of interest include informatics, educational technology, mobile computing, and immersive learning. He is pioneering the use of high-fidelity simulation to improve the safety and quality of clinical trials. He is also active in research related to: (1) evaluation of learning curves in clinical trials, (2) evaluation of the role of high-fidelity simulation on clinical trial design and implementation, (3) comparison of interactive methods of training health care coordination skills, (4) comparison of interactive methods of evaluating health care team performance, and (5) development of a virtual environments for learning.
