and Norman graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1986. After early clinical and academic training in obstetrics and gynecology in Edinburgh, she was awarded the degree of MD by the University of Edinburgh in 1992. Since 1993, she has conducted translational research aiming to understand factors responsible for the initiation of normal and abnormal parturition. She also leads to multicentre clinical trials of therapies to improve the process of parturition for women and their babies.

Jane formerly held the Regius Chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Glasgow but has been Professor of maternal and fetal health and Director of the Edinburgh Tommy’s Centre for maternal and fetal health research since 2008. In 2014, she also became Vice-principal, equality, and diversity (now Vice-principal, people and culture) at the University of Edinburgh. Jane maintains an active clinical practice as a Consultant Obstetrician at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
