Holly E. RichterMD, PhD
Dr. Holly E. Richter, is an active clinician/surgeon and clinical researcher. She has led numerous clinical trials in pelvic floor research, specifically in the areas of urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. She also has a strong interest in the geriatric patient and has investigated outcomes of surgery in this growing population.
In April, 2013, Dr. Richter assumed the presidency of the Society for Gynecologic Surgeons (SGS), a select group of more than 250 physicians in private or academic practice involved in the teaching and practice of advanced gynecologic surgery. She is currently the PI in the NICHD sponsored Pelvic Floor Disorders Network and the NIDDK sponsored Urinary Incontinence Treatment Network and oversees other NIH research trials and industry sponsored studies.
She regularly performs peer reviews for many journals and also has a strong interest in treating vesicovaginal fistulas in Africa. Dr. Richter directs the fellows’ research initiatives through an ABOG accredited fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. In 2010, the National Association for Continence acknowledged the UAB Continence and Urogynecology Care Clinics as the first Center of Excellence in the US. Dr. Richter completed her medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1992, followed by residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and fellowship in Urogynecology, both at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
