Hans P. Sviggum, M.D., is a board-certified anesthesiologist and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He specializes in obstetric anesthesiology, regional anesthesia, and perioperative medicine, providing expert anesthesia care for women during labor and delivery as well as patients undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures. His clinical interests include labor analgesia, regional anesthesia, perioperative nerve injury, post-cesarean delivery pain management, anesthesiology simulation, and resident education.
Dr. Sviggum earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Biochemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College and his Doctor of Medicine from Mayo Medical School. He completed a transitional year internship, anesthesiology residency, fellowship training in regional anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic, and an additional fellowship in obstetric anesthesiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is board-certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sviggum is a nationally recognized educator and physician leader. He has served as Associate Program Director for the Mayo Clinic Anesthesiology Residency Program, Director of Education for Obstetric Anesthesia, and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. He has received numerous honors for excellence in teaching, including Distinguished Educator Awards, Teacher of the Year recognition, and the Fellow of the Year Award, reflecting his longstanding commitment to mentoring residents and fellows.
Dr. Sviggum is actively involved in clinical research focused on regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, perioperative nerve injury, patient safety, and postoperative pain management. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and serves in leadership roles with professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology, and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. Through his clinical expertise, educational leadership, and scholarly contributions, Dr. Sviggum continues to advance the fields of obstetric anesthesiology and perioperative medicine.
