Hanna Maryam Zafar MD, MHS

Hanna Zafar MD, MHS is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her clinical work is focused on the study of gastrointestinal diseases on ultrasound MRI and CT as well as performing and teaching challenging abdominal biopsies. Her research is focused on optimizing the reporting, management, and outcomes of non-emergent actionable imaging findings (e.g. unexpected solid renal masses). She co-created and implemented a standardized ordinal radiology coding system that assigns the malignant likelihood of imaging findings (i.e. benign, indeterminate or suspicious for cancer) on all abdominal and pelvic CT, MRI and ultrasound reports at three hospitals within our health system; these codes have been used to gather important data on quality and safety, health equity and cancer outcomes.
