Dr. Guillermo Garcia-Manero, M.D., is a globally recognized physician-scientist and expert in hematologic malignancies, with a distinguished focus on leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). He serves as Chair Ad Interim of the Department of Leukemia in the Division of Cancer Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the leading cancer centers in the world.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Garcia-Manero has dedicated his career to improving outcomes and quality of life for patients with leukemia, particularly MDS, by advancing understanding of disease biology and translating that knowledge into novel therapeutic strategies. He directs the MD Anderson MDS/AML Moon Shot® program and leads the largest clinical and research program for MDS worldwide. His work has resulted in over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications spanning disease biology, prognostication, and innovative clinical trials.

Dr. Garcia-Manero earned his M.D. from the University of Zaragoza School of Medicine in Spain and completed postgraduate training in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. His roles have included faculty appointments at MD Anderson since 1999 and leadership positions in research consortia and editorial boards of major hematology journals.

He has been honored with numerous awards for scientific excellence and leadership, including lifetime achievement and pioneer awards in leukemia and hematologic oncology, and in 2024 was named a Giant of Cancer Care in Leukemia.
