Dr. Gianrico Farrugia is President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, succeeding John Noseworthy, M.D. in January 2019. Prior to this, Dr. Farrugia served as a Mayo Clinic vice president and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida. He oversaw Mayo Clinic’s Florida operations from January 2015 until December 2018. During his leadership, Mayo Clinic in Florida established itself as the destination medical center for the Southeast, with significant investments in people, space, and technology including the opening of the 190,000-square-foot Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Building on the Florida campus in 2018 for patients seeking cancer, neurology, and neurosurgical care. The building is part of an over $350 million investment to continue to develop Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus as the premier medical destination in the Southeast.

During the course of his career, Dr. Farrugia has spent nearly 30 years as a Mayo physician jointly appointed in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, and the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Dr. Farrugia completed his undergraduate training at St. Aloysius College and earned his medical degree from the University of Malta Medical School.

Dr. Farrugia is the co-author of Think Big, Start Small, Move Fast: A Blueprint for Transformation from the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, a book highlighting the need for change in the delivery of health care, and has published more than 250 articles on genomics and the treatment of disorders of gastrointestinal motility.
