Gabriel Rinkel

Gabriel Rinkel (1961) studied medicine in Utrecht. During the medical study, he did 6 months of research at the Rudolf Magnus Institute for pharmacology in Utrecht on the effect of neuropeptides on behavior. Later during their medical study, he did research at the Addiction Research Foundation, University of Toronto, Canada. After graduating in 1987 he started his residency in neurology and in the meantime research for his thesis on perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage; both were completed in 1991. For his thesis he received in 1992 the Synthélabo Research Award from the ‘Société de Ciculation et Métabolism du Cerveau’ at the CHU Lariboisière-Saint Louis in Paris. In 1997 he received the award “Teacher of the year” of the Faculty of Medicine and in 1998 the Stroke Research Award at the annual European Stroke Conference in Edinburgh. From 1999 to 2004 he was a Clinical Established Investigator of the Netherlands Heart Foundation. In 2002 he was appointed as Professor of Neurology. From 2003 through 2009 he chaired the Medical Ethics Committee of the University Medical Centre Utrecht.

Since 2011 he is Chairman of Neurology at the University Medical Center Utrecht. He also is the vice-director of the Rudolf Magnus Institute of Neuroscience. His research focuses on subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracranial aneurysms. He is (co-)author of more than 300 papers on subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracranial aneurysms in international peer-reviewed journals and has given invited lectures at more than 25 universities in 4 continents, and at international conferences such as the World Congress of Neurology, the European Neurological Society, the World Stroke Congress, the International Stroke Congress, the European Stroke Congress and the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutical Neuroradiology. In 2006 he gave the Stanley Davidson Lecture at the Neurology Symposium of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
