Gabriel Contreras MD, MPH

Gabriel Nicolas Contreras, M.D., MPH, earned his medical degree in 1984 from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico. He trained in Internal medicine, nephrology and hypertension, critical care medicine, and earned a Master's degree in Public Health between 1988 and 2003. In 1996, he joined the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. During his time as faculty in the Department of Medicine, he has been involved in the development and establishment of a successful clinical research program in the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension with the accrual of 36 research grants, 116 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and 6 chapters published in textbooks.

In the 29 years of his academic career, he has maintained research funding from different sources such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the pharmaceutical Industry. He has an ongoing commitment to improving kidney disease outcomes among racial and ethnic minorities at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. He has a particular interest in kidney involvement of systemic lupus erythematosus, a disease commonly named lupus nephritis, that particularly affects young women. He is a recognized expert nationally and internationally in the care of patients with lupus nephritis. He is also an expert in the care of critically ill patients with acute kidney injury.
