Nola Leonard is a veterinary surgeon and senior lecturer in veterinary microbiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, UCD. She gained her PhD and extensive research experience over 10 years working with pigs and dairy cows in Teagasc, Moorepark Research Centre, Co. Cork. Since taking up her present position in the Veterinary College in 1997, she has concentrated most of her research on food borne pathogens, specifically salmonellosis in pigs. She has built up considerable expertise and obtained substantial funding in the area of salmonellosis. Her contacts with the farming industry, particularly with the pig industry, including farmers, processors, specialist pig veterinary practitioners and Teagasc pig advisors are good. Recent research funding has included grants for investigation of antimicrobial resistance in animal pathogens, and commensal organisms, including LA-MRSA and Escherichia coli.
