Enrique Mercader Cidoncha

Dr. Enrique Mercader Cidoncha holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid, specializing in General and Digestive System Surgery. He is also an expert in endocrine and obesity surgery. After his training as a resident at the Gregorio Marañón University General Hospital in Madrid, he studied hepatic surgery and hepatic transplantation and became part of the hepatic transplant team at this same hospital. He also works in other areas, such as oesophageal and stomach surgery, fields that allow him to come into contact with obesity surgery. During all this time, endocrine surgery is a constant in his professional career and progressively becomes his main focus of attention. As he states, “it is a very attractive super-specialty that involves a high level of dedication, a great level of knowledge in the medical pathology and the possibility of working with multidisciplinary teams”. Currently, his career focuses exclusively on endocrine and obesity surgery. He is a member of the board of directors of the Endocrine Surgery Section of the Spanish Association of Surgeons and is involved in the training programmes in Endocrine Surgery for residents of General and Digestive System Surgery.

His professional background and previous work as a general surgeon have allowed him to have the necessary experience to deal with the most complex cases, such as thyroid cancer extensions, which require extensive resections, or adrenal cancers, which even require knowledge in vascular surgery. In the area of endocrine surgery, he is a pioneer in the application of video-assisted surgery techniques, through which he performs incisional surgery in places that are hardly visible or not visible at all, avoiding scarring of the neck. He also has extensive experience in nerve monitoring, which guarantees good voice quality after surgery He holds the European Board as a Qualified Expert in Endocrine Surgery, maximum recognition of this specialty granted by the European Union of Medical Specialist (UEMS).
