Elbert Khiangte

Dr. Elbert Khiangte is a senior consultant in general and laparoscopic surgery at International Hospital, Guwahati, Assam. He has been doing basic and advanced, conventional and laparoscopic surgeries since 2000.Currently, his forte is single port laparoscopic surgery (a surgery done through a single hole in the umbilicus) using his self modified EK-Glove port which apart from being easily accessible is also cost-effective. This EK-glove port has been extensively used in a wide range of laparoscopic surgeries as well as laparoscopic assisted gastrointestinal surgeries. He started performing single port laparoscopic surgeries since September 2009 and is a pioneer in this field. He is one of the few surgeons doing this surgery in Eastern India. He has innovated a cost effective single port device with plastic rings and glove and has performed more than 400 single port laparoscopic surgeries using this method and has received international acclaim for the same. He has also been awarded the best innovation award at the “1st International Conference and Live Operative Workshop on Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery”, Mumbai and at the “10th Biennial National Congress of IAGES 2012’, Ahmedabad. He has also presented his paper on single-port surgery at a gathering of Gastro-surgeons at the Oslo University, Norway. Several young surgeons have received hands-on-training under his guidance in laparoscopic and single-port surgeries.

Dr Khiangte firmly believes that the benefits of laparoscopic surgery should be passed on to one and all, irrespective of the socioeconomic status. He thus strives to make his services and expertise available to patients from all strata of the society and from across the country. He regularly conducts charitable laparoscopic workshops in different parts of Assam. He has also the credit of being the only private surgical practitioner who has introduced laparoscopic surgery in different government hospitals and also private hospitals in Assam. He has several publication and presentations to his credit. He has also authored several surgical videos published by WebSurg. He is a regular invitee to various CME lectures and Guest Lectures and has conducted various workshops in different parts of Assam and India.
