Edward R. Mariano, MD, MAS (Clinical Research) After graduating from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Mariano completed his anesthesiology residency and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center with emphases in clinical investigation and regional anesthesia for children.

Dr. Mariano then joined the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), in July 2004, where he started UCSD's first training program in Regional Anesthesia for residents and fellows. The Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship that he founded was the first one-year fellowship in this subspecialty in California. He served as Division Chief of Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine at UCSD until 2010. During that period, he earned a Masters of Advanced Studies Degree in Clinical Research and developed a program that is now widely recognized for its innovative research, excellent training, and superb clinical care.

Dr. Mariano joined the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in August 2010 as Chief of the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Service and was appointed Associate Chief of Staff for Inpatient Surgical Services in 2013. He is also Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, and the Co-Director of the Stanford Acute Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. Dr. Mariano is board-certified in anesthesiology and the subspecialty of pediatric anesthesiology.
