Donald Black MD, MS

Donald W. Black, MD, is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in psychiatry and a fellowship in Psychiatric Epidemiology at the University of Iowa. He has served as Vice Chair for Education and in the Residency Training Program.

He has received many awards for his teaching and clinical care, including the University of Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. He has been continuously listed in “Best Doctors in America” since 1996. Dr. Black’s research has focused on behavioral addictions and severe personality disorders. His research has been funded over the years by the federal government, industry, and private foundations.

Dr. Black has over 400 scientific publications and is the lead author of the bestselling Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, now in its sixth edition. He is also the lead author of the DSM-5 Guidebook. He has researched and written about antisocial personality disorder for over 30 years and authored Bad Boys Bad Men: Confronting Antisocial Personality Disorder (Sociopathy), Revised and Updated for the lay audience. He is the past President of the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists and presently serves as secretary/treasurer. He is a former consultant to the Iowa Department of Corrections.
