Dr. David P. Martin is a Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and a consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. A board-certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, he is widely recognized for his leadership in patient safety, quality improvement, perioperative medicine, and pain management. His work has focused on developing systems and strategies that reduce preventable harm during surgical procedures and enhance the safety and effectiveness of anesthesia care.

Dr. Martin earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with highest distinction from Indiana University before completing both his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He subsequently completed a transitional internship, anesthesiology residency, pain management fellowship, and postdoctoral fellowship in neurology at Mayo Clinic. He is board-certified in both Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Martin has combined clinical practice, research, and education to advance anesthesiology and patient safety. His research interests include reducing the risk of injury during anesthesia, improving communication among surgical and anesthesia teams, optimizing perioperative temperature management, and minimizing side effects associated with pain therapies. His work has contributed to the development of safer perioperative practices and quality improvement initiatives that benefit patients across healthcare systems.
