David F. Albertini PhD

David F. Albertini, PhD, is Professor and Chair of Reproductive Cell Biology at the Bedford Research Foundation, where he continues his longstanding contributions to reproductive medicine and biology. He received his Ph.D. in 1975 from Harvard Medical School, where he focused on the cell biology of the mammalian ovary. Following postdoctoral work at the University of Connecticut Health Center, he returned to Harvard as an Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology (1977-1984). He later joined Tufts University Schools of Medicine, where he held multiple academic leadership positions, including Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology (1996-2000), Director of the Center for Reproduction (1999-2003), and Director of the Confocal Microscopy Core (1988-1999).

From 2004 to 2016, Dr. Albertini was the Hall Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He subsequently became Director of Laboratories and Senior Scientist at the Center for Human Reproduction in New York City (2016-2020) and continues as a Visiting Scientist there, as well as at The Rockefeller University. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, the official journal of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a position he has held since 2009.

Dr. Albertini’s research over the years has bridged ovarian, oocyte, and embryo physiology from a comparative perspective, emphasizing novel imaging strategies to explore cell cycle and cytoskeletal dynamics. His most recent work at the Bedford Research Foundation is focused on developing and implementing human oocyte activation protocols to generate parthenogenic eggs for stem cell propagation, as well as understanding the mechanisms underlying ovarian and oocyte aging in women.

A widely recognized expert in reproductive biology, Dr. Albertini has received numerous prestigious awards, including a Basil O’Connor fellowship from the March of Dimes, the Hammond Medal from the Society for Reproduction and Fertility (UK), the Founder’s Lecturer for the Australian Society of Reproductive Biology, The Beacon Award FIR course MBL, and most recently, recognition as an Honorary Member of the International Society for In Vitro Fertilization (ISIVF). He remains an active contributor to the field, serving on scientific advisory boards and frequently presenting his research at conferences worldwide.
