Daniel Schimmel MD, MS, FSCAI

As an active interventional attending, he is accomplished in complex coronary, peripheral arterial, and pulmonary vascular interventions. In addition to treating complex, high-risk coronary disease, Dr. Schimmel has a special clinical focus on both acute and chronic venothromboembolic disorders. He leads the Acute Pulmonary Embolism Response Team and participates as a key member of the Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension Team and the Cardiogenic Shock Team.

Dr. Daniel Schimmel is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University and Hospital practicing interventional cardiology at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. Dr. Schimmel attended medical school at Rush University and completed residency and fellowship training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. As Chief Medical Resident and Chief Fellow, he was dedicated to research and education. He also holds Master’s degrees in Exercise Science and in Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Schimmel's research interests are focused on how to improve the safety and efficacy of high-risk coronary and pulmonary vascular interventions. Not only does this include leading and participating in drug and device trials, but he also performs research on simulation-based medical education to improve healthcare delivery in the procedural specialties.
