Dr Morrey was educated in Melbourne, Victoria. He undertook an honours degree in science at the University of Melbourne graduating with 1st class honours in 1986. In 1987 he moved to Queensland to study medicine at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1991. He then commenced specialist training on the orthopedic program within Queensland obtaining a fellowship in orthopedic surgery from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2000. Further specialist training was then undertaken in Bristol, UK and Lecco, Italy in 2001 in pelvic and acetabular trauma and reconstruction, primary and revision joint replacement, spinal surgery and acute sports injury.

Dr Morrey currently holds an elected position on the Australian Orthopedic Association Board and is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Specialist Orthopedics Clinical Advisory Group. He is also an examiner for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons for the Orthopedic Specialists final exams. He is the immediate past Chairman of the AO Trauma Asia Pacific Board and Vice Chairman of the AO Trauma International Board.
