Dr. Brian Helfand is a research assistant professor in the Department of Urology. He completed his MD/PhD at Northwestern University and is continuing with his clinical education in urology. His research focus is directed towards identifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying prostate cancer. Specifically, he is interested in the changes in both the cytoskeletal and nucleoskeletal intermediate filament proteins which promote metastases and disease progression. In addition, he is focused upon elucidating the mechanisms by which intermediate filaments control the expression of DNA (transcription) and their combined influence on cell behavior.
