Brian Lam, PA-C, is an experienced Physician Assistant, Research Investigator, and Associate Medical Director of Research at the Beatty Liver and Obesity Research Program within the Center for Liver Diseases at Inova Health System in Falls Church, Virginia. With more than 20 years of clinical experience and over 15 years dedicated to liver-related research, he specializes in hepatology and the evaluation and management of metabolic liver disease, particularly metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).
In his clinical practice, Brian focuses on outpatient hepatology consultation, MASLD/MASH screening, non-invasive liver disease assessment, fibrosis risk stratification, and evidence-based management of metabolic and obesity-related liver disease. His expertise includes the use of non-invasive fibrosis tests and biomarkers, assessment of advanced fibrosis, MASH pharmacotherapy, and emerging therapeutic approaches.
As Associate Medical Director of Research, he leads multidisciplinary research teams involving scientists, biostatisticians, and clinicians. His research experience encompasses Phase II and III clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, translational research, clinical outcomes, large database analyses, health resource utilization, linkage-to-care initiatives, patient-reported outcomes, quality of life, and liver biomarker research. He has served as a Principal Investigator and Lead Sub-Investigator on numerous clinical trials involving MASH/NASH, liver fibrosis, hepatitis B and C, and emerging therapies, including studies of semaglutide, lanifibranor, efruxifermin, and other investigational agents.
Brian has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented extensively at major hepatology and gastroenterology meetings, including AASLD, EASL, ACG, and DDW. His scholarly work has contributed to understanding liver fibrosis, non-invasive testing, metabolic risk factors, patient-reported outcomes, disease burden, stigma, pruritus, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and mortality in MASLD/MASH.
He is actively involved in professional and educational leadership, including serving as Chair/Co-Chair of the APP Committee of the Global NASH/MASH Council and Global Liver Council. He is also involved with AASLD, ACG, GHAPP, the MASH Alliance, and other liver-focused organizations. He serves as a mentor and educator for students, research interns, APPs, and healthcare professionals and has delivered numerous educational presentations on MASH, MASLD, non-invasive testing, and emerging treatment strategies.
