Dr. Berthold Koletzko studied medicine at the University of Münster and trained in paediatrics at Baragwanath Hospital Joannesburg-Soweto, South Africa, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre Moski, Tanzania, and the children’s hospitals of the Universities of Düsseldorf, Germany, and Toronto, Canada. In 1992, Dr. Koletzko was appointed Professor of Pediatrics (extraordinarius) at the Ludwig Maximilian Universität München. He is also head of the Division of Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital, LMU Munich.
He received many honors, including honorary doctorates from the Universities of Granada, Pécs, and Poznan and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). Research.com rated him as the highest-ranked German researcher in paediatrics in the year 2024, based on scientific citations and D-Index. He is the founder and Chair of the Board of Stiftung Kindergesundheit (Child Health Foundation), engaged in science-based health promotion in childhood and adolescence.
