Barbara has her BScN and master’s degrees from The University of Western Ontario along with a Certificate in Practice Education and a Certificate in Multi-Media and Web Development from the University of British Columbia. She has been a nurse for over 25 years, always working in post-surgical care in some capacity or other. Originally from London, ON, Barbara was an instructor at The University of Western Ontario for 6 years, doing a combination of clinical and classroom teaching. Until recently, she worked as the Clinical Nurse Educator for the post-surgical units at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). Prior to that she was a staff nurse on the general surgery unit at NRGH and was one of the inaugural Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners for central Vancouver Island. Since joining the VIU faculty in 2012, Barbara has taught a combination of clinical and classroom courses. In 2014, Barbara became the simulation coordinator for Health and Human Services (HHS). She is in charge of ensuring that simulation is integrated across the Register Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Health Care Aide curricula. In the future, Barbara would like to bring the rest of the Health Sciences programs into the simulation suites and develop a Standardized Patient Program for the HHS faculty. Come by and see her, Frank, and Anne (the simulators) in the simulation suites on the 3rd floor. Barbara’s area of research is violence against women. Future areas of research interest include teaching/learning/education and simulation.
