Dr Armando Peruga is Programme Manager of WHO's Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI), a post he assumed in 2009. He also oversees the national capacity building unit, a post he assumed in 2006. From 1990 to 2006, he worked as an epidemiologist at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. During his last seven years at PAHO he was leader of its tobacco control programme.

During 1986-1990, he worked for the District of Columbia's Commission of Public Health as a behavioural change epidemiologist. In his native Spain, he was Dean of the National School of Public Health and later Director of the Research Institute on Health and Welfare in Madrid.
