Professor Andreas Zimmer received his diploma in Biology from the University of Giessen, Germany, in 1986 and received his doctoral degree in 1989 for research conducted in the Center for Molecular Biology in Heidelberg and the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. From 1989 to 2000, he worked at the National Institutes of Mental Health, USA, in several positions, from a postdoctoral fellow to an independent investigator and group leader. In 2000, he was appointed Professor for Molecular Neurobiology at the University of Bonn. He became Chair for Cell Biology at the University of Bielefeld in 2006, but returned to the University of Bonn in 2008 as the Director of the newly founded Institute of Molecular Psychiatry. In 2015, he was appointed Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Bonn.

Professor Zimmer's research focuses on the elucidation of pathogenic mechanisms leading to psychiatric disorders, using genetic animal models. His special focus is on aging, drug addiction and neuroinflammation. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on these subjects and serves as reviewer on many international journals as well as national and international funding agencies. Professor Zimmer is the author of 246 original papers as well as 33 reviews, books and book chapters
