Alain Fischer is a doctor and specialist in pediatrics and immunology. After a postdoctoral fellowship at University College, London, he initiated an independent research activity in an Inserm unit located at the Necker-Enfants Malades university hospital in Paris. Since 1991, he has been director of the unit entitled “Normal and pathological development of the immune system”. Founding member of the Institute of Genetic Diseases "Imagine" which he directed from 2009 to 2016, located on the same site.

Alain Fischer was a professor of pediatrics at the University of Paris-Descartes. From 1996 to 2012, he headed the pediatric immunology and hematology department at the Necker-Enfants Malades hospital.

Alain Fischer is now a professor at the College de France, holder of the chair of experimental medicine. Alain Fischer's work concerns genetic diseases of the immune system and their treatment, in particular by gene therapy. Alain Fischer is a member of the Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of Medicine. He received the Jeantet Prize, the Inserm Grand Prize, and the Japan Prize.
