The ULPGC was founded in 1989. In just a few years, it has established itself as one of Spain's leading universities, excelling in research related to tourism, oceanography, veterinary medicine, and public health. ULPGC have six campuses, three of which are located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, another in the municipality of Arucas (Gran Canaria), and two more on the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

ULPGC have more than 1,600 professors who carry out significant research activities, organized into more than 100 research groups and 11 nationally and internationally recognized research institutes.
