On January 8, 1992, the Spanish Society of Palliative Care (SECPAL) was founded and registered in Madrid, bringing together various health professionals: oncologists, general practitioners and health centers, anesthesiologists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, religious and bioethicists. All who in their daily work attend, care and console patients who are not curable.
Palliative care, or Hospice care as they were called in many Anglo-Saxon countries at their inception, is a special type of care designed to provide well-being or comfort and support to patients and their families in the final stages of a terminal illness.
Palliative Care aims to ensure that patients have the days that remain conscious and free of pain, with symptoms under control, so that the last days can run with dignity, at home or in a place as close as possible , surrounded by people who love them.
