In Romania there were in the second half of the twentieth century clinics of internal medicine in the profile of gastroenterology was evident in terms of endowment with specific equipment (especially endoscopy) and concerns the theoretical (education, research), especially the diagnosis and treatment of patients with digestive disorders. These clinics had taken being mainly in major academic centers (Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Timisoara), thanks to personalities whose priority, especially in research, was gastroenterology.

Thus, in Bucharest, Ionel Nanu Muscel and Paul had concerns and publications jaundice, Paul I. and A. Paunescu-Podeanu published in 1938 monograph published by Masson from Paris' Le duodenum non ulcereux ". In Cluj, Iuliu Hatieganu described infectivity catarrhal jaundice soon after World War I and individualized absolute priority duodenal stasis. Here they were included for the first time in a treaty syndrome stomach surgery and liver surgery syndrome (Julius Hatieganu) and published the first monograph about stomach surgery (Octavian Fodor). In these clinics they were grouped along internists, and radiologists, pathologists and surgeons with interests in gastroenterology.
