The creation of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine was a logical and necessary step in the development of medical science in Ukraine. Legitimate because Ukrainian medical science has a rich history associated with the names of prominent scientists in the field of theoretical, clinical and preventive medicine of the past and present, which have created well-known scientific schools in research institutions and medical universities of the country. This was a necessary stage because it is the Academy that is capable of effectively solving such tasks as determining the priority directions of medical science development, holding high scientific and methodological levels of fundamental and applied research, promoting the integration of academic, university and branch medical sciences and forming a unified policy in this field. sphere.
In 1991, the Department of Problems of Medicine was organized at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (then also the Academy of Sciences of the USSR). But the leading medical scientists understood the need to establish an Academy of Medical Sciences in Ukraine. In November 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law of Ukraine "Fundamentals of Ukrainian Health Law", the 20th article of which included the following: "Higher scientific medical institution of Ukraine with a charter of a self-governing organization and independent in conducting research and development of directions. the scientific search is the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine ". In pursuance of this Law, the creation of the Academy was initiated. The principles of the organization of the Academy of Medical Sciences were discussed at the meeting of Academician B. E. Paton, President of the National Academy of Sciences, and academician Amosov, O. Vozianov, Yu.I.Kundiev, O.M. Lukyanova, V.V.Forkis, O.Shalimova with the President of Ukraine L.M. Kravchuk. On February 24, 1993, the President of Ukraine signed the Decree, which established the Academy of Medical Sciences, defined its status, main tasks and established the number. On the development of the Presidential Decree, a decree was issued by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Academician O. V. Vozianov was appointed as the president-organizer of the Academy, 25 academicians and founders appointed , as well as a list of academic institutions that should have been included in the Academy.
