Goals :
On March 27, 2006, the German Society for Eating Disorders (DGESS) was founded at a meeting of scientifically active eating disorder specialists in Frankfurt am Main. As a non-profit organization, the society's mission is to promote and network both science and research, as well as their application in the prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of eating disorders.

The association’s goals are:
• Establishment and promotion of a network of people from different professional groups who are specialized in the early detection and prevention of eating disorders as well as in the counseling and treatment of people with eating disorders
• Promoting the improvement of prevention, early detection, diagnostics and therapy options for those affected
• Promoting eating disorder research and its medical, psychological and social implementation
• Promotion of training and further education in prevention, early detection, diagnostics and therapy of eating disorders
• Advising and cooperating with public institutions as far as this concerns the association's objectives
• Promoting cooperation with other German-speaking societies as far as this concerns the association's objectives
• Promoting and expanding national and international cooperation in the field of eating disorders
• Promotion and coordination of self-help initiatives for those affected and their relatives
• Holding conferences and congresses to promote the interests of the society
