The Duke Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine is committed to offering patients exceptional care; conducting research to better understand, diagnose, and treat pulmonary disease; and training other physicians and students about aspects of their specialty.

Mission:
The mission of the Duke Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine is to deliver outstanding clinical services to their patients with lung disease and the critically ill, pose questions concerning important issues in their specialty, search for answers through their research efforts, and teach other physicians and students aspects of their clinical specialty.

Focus:
Their clinical care, research, and training programs focus on the most pressing issues facing patients with pulmonary disease or those who are critically ill.
Their treatment and research is focused primarily in the following areas:
• Acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
• Cystic fibrosis
• Hyperbaric medicine and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis
• Interstitial lung disease
• Interventional pulmonology
• Lung cancer diagnosis and treatment
• Lung injury following high-dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation
• Lung transplantation for even the most criticially ill patients
• Mechanisms of airway hyperresponsiveness in patients with asthma
• Physiologic processes that control oxygenation and oxygen delivery
• Pulmonary disorders that affect sleep
• Severe advanced lung disease
