Activity Summary:
Three months ago, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) released new guidelines for the early management of the patient with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). If you provide care to stroke patients, this is the session you need to attend. Nursing practice that was considered state-of-the-art two years ago is now ancient history. In this session, participants focus on developing a more comprehensive understanding of the 2018 American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The AHA/ASA has produced a new scoring system, new guidelines and new evidence tables. Participants learn the skills to quickly navigate through the guidelines and have a direct impact on patient care. More importantly, participant develop an understanding of how the AHA/ASA interpreted the evidence behind each of these new guidelines.

Objectives:
• Interpret the meaning of the Class of Recommendations (COR) and Level of Evidence (LOE) scores provided for the new AHA/ASA recommendations.
• Identify new and revised recommendations which require a change in nursing practice and protocols for the acute ischemic stroke patient.
• Interpret the evidence tables to support changes in the 2018 guidelines for early management of patients with acute ischemic stroke.
