When All Else Fails: Novel Pharmacologic Options for Treatment Resistant Depression is organized by College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and will be held from Jun 01, 2017 - Apr 25, 2020.

Target Audience:
This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other healthcare professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary:
According to the CDC, 7.6% of Americans aged 12 and over experienced moderate or severe depressive symptoms in the past 2 weeks from 2009 - 2012. Approximately one-third of patients with major depressive disorder are treatment resistant. The management of treatment resistant depression (TRD), beyond the traditional monoaminergics, is not well described in the literature. Therefore, there is a need to explore other pharmacologic options that can be used to augment usual care in TRD. This program will explore novel treatment agents and provide an updated review of treatment strategies for patients with TRD.

Learning Objectives:
• Describe the pathophysiology of treatment resistant depression including the role of glutamate receptors.
• Review current treatment guidelines and recommendations for the management of treatment resistant depression.
• Discuss novel pharmacologic options for treatment resistant depression including ketamine and buprenorphine.
