OVERVIEW

What a D.O. Can Do For You: Supporting the Breastfeeding Dyad is organized by Osteopathy's Promise to Children (OPC).

Course Expiration: 08/01/2027

Description:
Have you ever wondered what a D.O. is? Have you been curious about osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and how it might benefit your patients? In this webinar designed for healthcare providers that care for breastfeeding dyads (parent and infant), we will dive into these questions and more. The webinar will discuss the ways that OMT can be utilized to help with issues of both members of the dyad, such as poor latch, mastitis, or even low milk supply. We will dive into the evidence that supports the use of osteopathic medicine to care for the breastfeeding dyad as well.

Educational Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Define osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and how it ties into the history and philosophy of osteopathic medicine.
  • Differentiate osteopathic manipulative treatment from other manual medicine modalities to help determine when referring for OMT might be beneficial to patients.
  • Illustrate the application of an osteopathic approach to the breastfeeding dyad including OMT to help foster a healthy breastfeeding relationship.
  • Review the current literature that supports the use of OMT to support and care for the breastfeeding dyad.
  • Identify common conditions seen both in the breastfeeding infant and breastfeeding parent that could benefit from OMT, and understand what the D.O. performing OMT would be assessing and treating with these presentations.
