Visitation policies have been in place since hospitals came into existence, but the principles that guide policies have changed dramatically. As healthcare has become more technical and complex, the role of family members at the bedside has changed. Visitors at the bedside can provide measurable support for patients. At the same time, some visitors can complicate nursing care, frustrating efforts to ensure safe and effective care. The nurse can seek and find a functional balance between these sometimes-competing needs. That balance will come from effective, clear communication with colleagues and visitors, and a healthy reliance on colleagues to help out as needed. This module provides an overview of the role of the nurse in forming care partnerships with a patient's family during hospital visits.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The purpose of this visitation continuing education program is to examine the role of the nurse in collaborating with patient visitors. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Discuss changing The Joint Commission standards on hospital visitation
• Describe evidence-based value that visitors can add to patient care
• Explain strategies nurses can use to develop partnerships with patients’ families and significant others
