Description:
Vaccine hesitancy is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability of vaccination services.” In 2019 it was identified as one of the top 10 threats to global health and identified as a growing issue in more than 90 countries. Vaccine hesitancy is leaving our communities vulnerable to preventable outbreaks because of the growing number of children without their childhood vaccines. School nurse professionals play a vital role in enhancing vaccine uptake by providing a strong vaccine recommendation. Participants will review common vaccine myths and learn what the science says about them. The session will provide two evidence-based methods of conversations through the CASE Method and Motivational Interviewing to engage with vaccine-hesitant parents and caregivers in having important conversations about vaccines. The skills and resources gained will equip school nurse professionals to increase vaccine rates in their communities and protect their students from vaccine-preventable diseases.
