Febrile Seizures

Febrile seizures are the most common type of seizures in children, typically occurring between 6 months and 5 years of age. While usually benign, these events can be alarming to caregivers and pose diagnostic and management challenges to healthcare providers. This CME/CE course provides a comprehensive understanding of febrile seizures, equipping clinicians with the knowledge needed to classify, assess, treat, and refer appropriately.

The course begins with classification—differentiating between simple febrile seizures, complex febrile seizures, and febrile status epilepticus based on seizure duration, recurrence, and focal features. Participants will explore key clinical characteristics that define each category and guide prognosis and care planning.

Learners will then review the epidemiology and prevalence of febrile seizures, including their typical age distribution, genetic predisposition, and relationship to viral infections and fever patterns. Risk factors for recurrence and for future epilepsy are presented to support anticipatory guidance and parental education.

Diagnostic strategies emphasize accurate clinical assessment and the judicious use of tests such as lumbar puncture, neuroimaging, or EEG—reserved for cases with red flags like prolonged seizures, focal onset, or atypical features. Clinicians will learn to distinguish febrile seizures from alternative diagnoses such as meningitis, epilepsy, or metabolic disturbances.

Treatment considerations include observation versus rescue medication and management of febrile status epilepticus. Participants will understand when to initiate benzodiazepines and how to balance safety with the self-limited nature of most febrile seizures.

Finally, prognosis is explored in depth. Most children have excellent long-term outcomes, but the course identifies when referral to pediatric neurology is warranted, particularly for children with abnormal development, recurrent complex seizures, or a family history of epilepsy.

By the end of this course, clinicians will be confident in managing febrile seizures in a family-centered, evidence-based manner, improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary interventions.
