The content of this enduring activity is derived from expert-led neurology sessions presented at the American Neurology Summit 2025.

Neuromuscular medicine encompasses a broad range of disorders involving peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junctions, motor neurons, and muscle fibers. These conditions include common entities such as peripheral neuropathies and myasthenia gravis, as well as rare genetic and metabolic disorders that require specialized evaluation.

This CME activity provides clinicians with an updated and clinically grounded review of neuromuscular diseases, beginning with foundational concepts about the anatomical levels affected—brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction, and muscle. The course emphasizes the importance of detailed history-taking, targeted physical examination, and the appropriate use of diagnostic tools such as nerve conduction studies, EMG, MRI, high-frequency ultrasound, genetic testing, and muscle biopsy when indicated. Participants will also learn the nuanced differences between axonal and demyelinating neuropathies, clinical patterns that distinguish neuropathy from generalized pain syndromes, and key features of hereditary disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease.

Special focus is placed on referral pathways, including when primary clinicians should involve a neuromuscular specialist and what evaluation should ideally be completed prior to referral. Learners will gain a framework for identifying red flags such as progressive weakness, fluctuating fatigability, atypical sensory loss, or suspected genetic disorders requiring multidisciplinary care. The course also clarifies what patients and providers should expect after referral — including comprehensive diagnostic testing, long-term management plans, coordination of multidisciplinary services (PT, OT, orthotics, dietetics, social work), and chronic follow-up for lifelong conditions.

By the end of this activity, clinicians will be better equipped to recognize neuromuscular disorders earlier, streamline referral decisions, and support patients through accurate diagnosis and long-term care.

  • Most neuromuscular disorders involve structures outside the spinal cord, primarily peripheral nerves and neuromuscular junctions.
  • Neuropathy is not defined by pain or tingling, but by loss of nerve function, often distal, with reduced reflexes.
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease type 1A represents 50% of all CMT cases and is the most common hereditary neuropathy.
  • Nerve biopsies are now rarely performed due to risks and advances in genetic testing.
  • Myasthenia gravis commonly begins with ocular symptoms and fluctuating weakness due to antibody-mediated NMJ dysfunction.
