Description:
Type 2 Diabetes is a serious health crisis effecting both adults and children. This course examines the genetic, environmental and other disease states that are causing the rate of diagnosis of type 2 diabetes to explode. Strategies to reduce the development of diabetes in those diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia, prediabetes, and insulin resistance will be covered. This course will also examine the consequences of diabetes and what can be done to manage and reduce risk of both microvascular and macrovascular disease using diet, exercise and drug therapy. Intermediate level.

Objectives:
• Explain the epidemiology of diabetes and pre-diabetes along with the guidelines for diagnosis of both.
• Identify guidelines for the treatment of type 2 diabetes at all levels of control put forth by the American Diabetes Association in adults and children.
• State the relationship between visceral fat, adipokines and insulin resistance.
• Explain the role of diet in weight management, improved glucose utilization and enhanced insulin sensitivity.
• Contrast different dietary strategies for lowering hemoglobin A1C and reducing cardiovascular disease.
• Develop an exercise protocol that has been shown to reduce and manage blood glucose and insulin levels while promoting weight loss if needed.
• List pharmacological interventions currently being used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, emerging therapies for treating type 2 diabetes, and potential therapies for prediabetes.
