Treatment After Metformin: Considerations for Therapy Selection is organized by Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES).

Intended Audience:
This is a knowledge-based activity designed for individual or groups of diabetes educators, including RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, MDs, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.
Accreditation:
Continuing Education Credit:
This educational program will provide 1.0 contact hours of continuing education credit. To successfully complete the program to earn CE credit, learners must view the recorded session in its entirety, successfully complete a short post-learning assessment, and submit an evaluation survey. A continuing education statement of credit will be provided online.
Registered Nurses:
The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This educational program will provide 1.0 contact hours of continuing education credit.
Registered Dietitians:
The American Association of Diabetes Educators, (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 1.0 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program.
Registered Pharmacists:
The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program provides 1.0 contact hours (0.10 CEUs) of continuing education credit.
Program Overview:
Current guidelines recommend lifestyle changes and metformin as initial therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes. When therapy must be advanced beyond metformin, clinicians are challenged to select from among a variety of potential treatment options. This educational activity addresses treatment options beyond metformin with a focus on therapies that offer complementary mechanisms of action for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Learning Outcome:
The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to identify appropriate treatment options for add-on therapy with metformin.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
• Review the pathophysiology of T2DM and the effects of insulin therapy on the underlying mechanisms of this disease
• Describe the pathophysiologic defects and natural history of type 2 diabetes
• Discuss the clinical and patient specific considerations for the selection of add-on therapy in patients not achieving glycemic control on metformin
• Outline the benefits and risks of various classes of antihyperglycemic agents including SGLT-2 inhibitors
• Discuss the importance of appropriate medication selection for patient medication adherence
